What a marvelous day. Earlier showers broke into sunshine, leaving the Zoo largely empty. Species from all over the world, some critically endangered, some from our own backyard, roamed about. Averaging an extra 10 years in captivity, their full bellies show a lack of competition. Giving little ones a chance to marvel at the beauty of our world. Inspiring a love of nature and a commitment to conservation. Or, at the very least, giving an amateur wildlife photographer the thrill of capture.

For one glorious October Saturday, Summer returned. For the bridal party gathered at the Coast Plaza Hotel, that meant the outdoor ceremony could go as planned. Jackets tossed aside, the guests enjoyed the warmth and touching vows. Joy filled every face, exclaiming how perfect the couple is for each other.

Sometimes a few minutes is all you need. Four minutes, to be precise, for yesterday's mini-portrait session. When smiles, laughter and joy are integral to a relationship, those wonderful elements surface quite quickly. In between gelato and touristing, it was such a treat to capture my lovely cousin and her kind boyfriend. I'm so happy for the two of you!

I had been truly looking forward to Crystal and Jordan's Wedding and it proved to be a perfect end to the Summer Wedding season. They are so sweet together. It was such a pleasure to capture their obvious joy.

From different locales, Tyron and I were inspired by the beautiful wood details we encountered. I adored Crystal's classic earrings, and Tyron worked with the Wedding rings:

The Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club is quickly becoming a favorite reception location! The surrounding gardens and courses are stunning to work with.

Crystal and Jordan took a fantastic spin on the traditional wedding cake! As soon as this gorgeous black forest cake was cut, the dessert buffet opened for the guests. They had a selection of eight different cakes, mousse and chocolate covered fruits. Meanwhile, the bridal party and parents of the couple were served with the Wedding cake. With a smaller cake, they could pick what they loved without needing to meet the needs of every guest.

A glorious day. The love between the bride and groom was so apparent, and their emotion was shared by all present. The ceremony and speeches brought tears to everyone's eyes. A day filled with perfect weather, gorgeous details and so much love.

Swetha and Al's Wedding was filled with such incredible detail. From the stunning florals, to the outfits and the handmade jewellery, all filled with such colour! Perfectly accenting the love and joy shared by all present:

Al is a professional jeweller, and created 3 gorgeous sets of jewellery to match Swetha's outfits! When he first saw Swetha, he helped put on her bridal set, as captured by Tyron:

I was so fortunate to capture my first Muslim ceremony. It is so heartwarming to see the same values celebrated across all the Weddings I have witnessed. A promise to have a union filled with love and mutual respect was shared.

This photograph that Tyron captured is completely candid. Right after the ceremony, Swetha and Al waited for a moment for the recieving line to arrive. I adore the composition:

Swetha is a teacher and I loved that her students (and the school's dance team) performed an awesome dance routine during the reception. Tyron captured them in the heat of their routine:

As we drove up the Coquihalla highway, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer outdoor beauty that surrounds British Columbia. Much to my delight, Crystal and Korey's Wedding ceremony took full advantage of those surroundings, open to the large trees and perfectly timed sunlight:

Over the past few Summers, I have had a few slices of Wedding cake, and this lovely creation easily made my top three! A moist lemon cake with strawberry mousse, covered in marshmallow foundant (my very best guess) was so delicious. I love Tyron's overhead perspective:

At its core, a Wedding is the union of two hearts into marriage. While small details allow the couple to reflect their personalities, the key element is the love and vows shared. I truly adored Shelagh and Jerry's small-scale Wedding as it allowed their love to be front and center. Stanley Park's Teahouse is so elegant that additional decorations are unnecessary. An intimate guest list allowed for one-on-one conversations with everyone present. An evening Wedding allowed for a relaxed preparation and sunset backdrop for dinner. A wedding to remember.

(It certainly helped that Summer arrived just in time to bless us with stunning light!)

Trees Organic (Gastown)

Trees Organic Coffee and Roasting House has been rated by the Province (and other local and international food critics) as having the best cheesecake in Vancouver. Located right by the steam clock in Gastown, it certainly lived up to its reputation! (Tyron and I had the tough job of sampling 3 different flavors).

I thoroughly enjoyed capturing the coffee shop's menu items. Food photography is a field all to its own:

From start to finish, Ashley and Ali's Wedding day was filled with handmade details, envisioned by the bride, which perfectly tied one moment to the next. The couple shared personal vows and speeches which brought tears to my eyes and showed the love and admiration that they share for one another. A fusion of cultures, families and cuisines made it a day truly their own.

Sophisticated and sweet, Josephine and Clement make such a wonderful couple. Their wedding was filled with thoughtful details, sweet family and church bonds and perfect weather.

Before Clement could see his lovely bride, he had to pass a series of games and tests set up by her bridesmaids. Along with writing and singing a love song up the stairwell and answering trivia questions, he was carried up the stairs by his groomsmen. The day began with elaborate preparations. Morning prayers, jewelery adornments and a gorgeous, if incredibly heavy, bridal sari. Bright colours dominated, with a deep red being central. Such beauty!

The day is a solemn one, full of tradition and ritual to prepare Shana and Shawn for a lifetime of prosperity, faithfulness and happiness. Overall, the day was stunning to witness.

Belinda and Paul

A whirlwind romance bloomed into a Wedding planned in just four weeks. Much to my delight, the sun came out that morning and stayed shining throughout a wonderfully relaxed and happy day. Belinda and Paul make each other very very happy and it was such a treat to spend the day with them.

Minoru Chapel is a truly dynamic location.

I love the way Tyron captured the sun beams shining down on the newlyweds:

One of the lovely advantages of a second shooter is the varied perspective offered in the final Wedding collection. For the previous two shots, I aimed at capturing them completely framed by the grass and concrete, making them the only distinguishable subjects. Instead, Tyron took a step back and skillfully balanced their affection and UBC's famous surroundings. As Paul graduated from the campus, it held sentimental value for them. In the end, I am so happy to be able to offer them both perspectives.

One of the main reasons that I adore Wedding photography, is that you get to witness such sweet moments between two people in love. As the guests were settling down, waiting for the grand entrance, I slipped into the back room to see the Paul and Belinda. This is what I saw:

Introducing: Dashell

Yesterday I met the youngest addition to Tyron's wonderful family; his nephew, Dashell! Now, I may be a little biased, but he is perfect. At two weeks he is incredibly sweet tempered, and goodness, he is a very handsome little man. I felt so lucky to be able to capture him so early on, and I have a funny feeling that he and my camera may meet again, he made the perfect little model :)

As this year comes to a close, I am getting rather excited thinking about what 2010 will bring. For Michelle Elisabeth Photography, 2009 was the year. It brought a summer of emotion, love, learning and being in disbelief that I could actually do what I love to positive reactions. Suddenly, this whole photography idea seemed like a reality, one that I can incorporate into my life.

To everyone who gave me who gave me advice or positive reinforcement, to everyone who invited me into their life to share their joy, love and livelihood and to everyone who has casually viewed my work here, I owe you one. You've made this possible. I'm so looking forward to see where this will go. Thank you.

I've got some rather exciting news! This upcoming March (March 4th) I will be participating in the Richmond Bridal Showcase, to be held at the River Rock Casino & Resort!

I am so so excited to meet many local brides (and grooms), to get excited over Wedding plans, discuss ideas and to catch a glimpse of this romantic period of their lives. The sheer joy beeming out of every bride-to-be that I've met is wonderful, and I cannot imagine being in a room filled with ladies and gentlemen experiencing this excitement. I'll be able to answer questions immediatly and show hard-copies of my work. While I appretiate the easy accessibility of information on the internet, I believe that personal connections are so important. Wedding Shows are a perfect venue to meet and connect with a lot of wonderful people.

If you know anyone planning a Wedding, please pass on the show's information. Tickets are free, but need to be reserved ahead of time on their website (go to "contact"). Be sure to check out the Showcase/ Showcase sponsors to get a glimpse at the wonderful sponsors that have signed up so far. Best of all, each bride can bring two guests along, to experience the runway show and enjoy the atmosphere. And, each and every bride goes home with a bag of goodies!

how-to: ginger snaps

If you know one thing about me, know that I have a massive sweet tooth. It's genetic. After all, my two grandmothers had and have very impressive chocolate stashes; just in case.

As any one with a sweet tooth would know, baking is wonderful. Any treat is only the length of a TV show away. I recently tried out a new recipe, ginger snaps and just had to share. They have the flavor of gingerbread, but are quicker to make and a bit softer and fluffier.

If you want to try something new to enjoy and share around the holidays; this may be it!

1. Preheat oven to 375 F

2. In a large bowl beat (with an electric mixer, whisk or a spoon) 1 cup packed brown sugar, 3/4 cup butter or shortening, 1/4 cup molasses and one egg.

3. Stir in spices (1 tsp. cinnamon, and a 1/2 tsp. of ginger and cloves or all-spice if it's available), 2 tsp. baking soda, 1/4 tsp. salt. Stir in 2 1/4 cups of flour.

4. Shape dough into small balls (rounded teaspoon size) and dip the top 1/2 in a bowl of sugar to coat.

5. Place on a greased tray and bake for 10-12 minutes (cracks have formed).

Sights of winter

With our first snowfall of the year yesterday, Vancouver finally seemed to reflect the Christmas excitement that has been building over the past few weeks. I wanted to share a few still-life's and portraits that I have done over the past weekend that reflect my Christmas season so far.

First off, the stunning bouquet we received from Tyron's sister. I adore the label and ornament she created:

My dear Omi taught my cousin and I a few tips and tricks in making the cookie recipes that she has had for most of her life:

Next we were invited to JS Performance's Chrismas party and Tyron had the biggest steak I had ever seen. Let's just say that if you finish it, the steakhouse pays for it. He finished it. (It was quite delicious).

That evening we dropped by a lovely wine and cheese party hosted by friends, and I had to snap a photo of the hosts and their decorated home:

And the little ones who loved every moment of snowfall during our early Christmas get-together:

And possibly my favorite photograph that I have ever taken. Simply, I hope my clients feel the way I feel about this image when they view their photographs. When you capture a single moment shared by two people you love dearly... it's beautiful and the reason I continue to love my job and artistic pursuit.

how-to: peppermint syrup

There's something instantly festive about the flavor of peppermint. Walk into any coffee shop and you'll find seasonal warm drinks with a hint of minty flavor. I thought the people on my Christmas list would enjoy making these drinks in the comfort of their homes.

While it does take a little bit of time, if you've got stirring and boiling water down, I promise you can make your own batch!

1. Drop into any craft/ cooking/ dollar store and pick up a few olive oil bottles:

2. In a saucepan, stir together one cup of sugar with one cup of water. (This can be easily doubled)

3. With the stove top on high, continue stirring until the mixture begins to boil.

4. Turn the heat down to low, and stir in one teaspoon of peppermint extract (available in most grocery stores).

(You can substitute the peppermint extract with vanilla, lemon or almond extract)

5. Starting with one drop at a time, add green food colouring until it reaches the perfect shade of minty green.

6. Allow the mixture to simmer on low (with the lid on) for 30 minutes.

7. Allow the mixture to cool for 30 minutes. Using a ladle and a funnel, fill the olive oil bottles.

8. Using any variety of blank stickers, label your creation!

9. Add two teaspoons to coffee or hot cocoa to flavor. Or if you're feeling really festive, add a teaspoon or two to your drink for a peppermint martini!

The Kenville Family

The close bond that the Kenville's share was so wonderful to witness and capture. Mr. and Mrs. Kenville received this session as an anniversary parents from their kids, and as someone who often photographs couples just starting their lives together, it was so lovely to capture a couple with grown and nearly-grown children. Despite chilly toes, the whole family rocked the session and I'm very excited to share these photographs with you!

Fia the ballerina

There's something magical about watching a young child absorbed in the arts. The sheer joy is undeniable and the freedom of expression is just wonderful. Miss Fia is such a musical little person at the age of 3. Not only does she love to sing, but has an undeniable love and desire to dance, and to dance all the time. And I think she makes quite the ballerina.

I was so blessed to be able to second shoot for Aimée of Moi Photography at this incredible Greek Orthodox Wedding!

If you've never considered feathers as an element of your bridal bouquet, you should! A perfect combination of delicacy and flair- I loved it!

One of the first pieces I see in the morning is the bride's jewelery and I was instantly smitten with her bracelet! It turns out that Ageliki is a very talented jewelery designer- I would highly recommend her line, she created gift pieces for all her attendants, and I loved every last one of them!

As I entered the church, I saw Zach (center) waiting for the ceremony to begin. It struck me that despite all the Wedding day chaos, both Zach and his bride appeared so peaceful.

Vancouver's Greek Orthodox church is the most stunning indoor venue I've ever seen. Every square inch seemed ornately decorated...

The lady in red is Zach's grandmother, the same person who gave Ageliki the horseshoe attached to her bouquet. It's a traditional British token of good luck.

It has been a very busy month, but when I realized that we're only a month away from Santa Claus' visit, I had to check in! Coming soon..

For my music class' midterm assignment, we had to set photographs to a song in which the artist is associated with a cultural, political or social change. Since I love (x 1000) the music of Jack Johnson, he was an easy choice. He used his last tour as a vehicle to highlight various non-profit groups who are working towards environmental change.

I also got a chance to photographically document my commute and gorgeous campus over the span of a day.

Josephine and Clement have a wonderful ability to keep each other laughing. Happy, genuine, big laughs that made me feel so lucky to be able to spend my morning with them!

I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do. Between the exams and rain that often define one's UBC experience, the photo shoot was a rare chance to really slow down and appreciate the beauty of the campus. That, and to realize that the campus allows for people like Josephine and Clement to fall in love. I know I'll be going back to school Tuesday with a renewed appreciation.

When I had the opportunity to second shoot Megan and Bryan's Wedding, I slipped my film Pentax K1000 in my camera bag. With their blessing, I captured a few frames as a great chance to get me back in the darkroom! There is something pretty magical about truly crafting a photograph; from the film processing, to the print developing, it is always a moment of excitement when the photograph emerges out of its bath of chemicals. While I will always love digital, it's always nice to get your hands dirty and really experience the art of creating photographs.

Danica and Dean's Wedding day was a wonderful celebration of love and family. I got the opportunity to second shoot along emerging photographers Robyn Michelle-Lee and Ayelet Tsabari. Creatively, it was a fantastic chance to articulate my creative process as we discussed our recently-captured photographs. This allowed me to step away from auto-pilot and consciously think about why I compose the way I do. In the end, I decided that essentially, photographs tell a story. Successful photographs utilize as few elements as possible to push the object or emotion in question to the forefront. Enjoy!

Susie and Markus are two incredibly sweet and joyful people. It was such a treat to get to spend their day with them. In a marriage filled with love and laughter, these two have a wonderfully happy future ahead of them!

After we'd finished shooting in one location, Susie noticed and picked a blackberry from a nearby bush. Needless to say, she's incredibly photogenic! I've never seen anyone make berry picking look so lovely :)

We had to stop into a classroom at UBC, in the very same building where they met...

Having had their official ceremony earlier this year in Germany, the day's vow renewal for their Canadian friends and family was wonderfully relaxed. I loved the romance of them walking each other down the aisle.

From the moment we arrived, Tyron and I were greeted with kindness and overwhelming hospitality. I honestly felt like a guest the entire day! Sarah and Robert are two incredible people who I felt so blessed to be around as they celebrated their Wedding with their friends and family. August 22nd is also the day of the annual PNE parade. I was told that it has rained on the parade 8 of the last 10 years- thankfully Sarah and Robert beat the odds and had a gorgeously sunny Wedding!
